The Nino de Atocha appeared during the 13th century in Spain, when the Spanish were being imprisoned by the Moors. The Moors were very strict with the Christian prisoners and many did not receive food to eat. However, a child would come to them, wearing pilgrim's clothing, and provide the prisoners with food so that they would not die. The Nino De Atocha is the Child Jesus and is the patron of those who are in prison.
